Connecticut National Guard at Wolcott School District

Follow–Up:

Stay on Track and the Connecticut National Guard are making a major impact on middle school kids in Wolcott School District, according to a recent article written by Andrew Larson of the Waterbury, CT Republican American newspaper.

SFC Jason Houle and SGT Michelle Martinez are implementing Stay on Track to middle-school kids at Plymouth’s Eli Terry Jr. Middle School. Understanding the importance of reaching teens with a life skills/substance abuse program, Principal Gary Travers said, “This is when kids are starting to experiment with drugs and this is where they should be hearing the right things about it.”

The Stay on Track program will be introduced to several other middle schools within Wolcott’s School District. In Wolcott, physical education teachers serve as health teachers. The National Guard supplements their instruction. At first Travers was skeptical with the military presence, but he attended several classes and was impressed, stating, “Especially with the wars we are having, students have a different respect for the National Guard, and the people who come in are excellent with the kids.”

Anyone interested in learning more about the Connecticut National Guard Stay on Track program can email First Sergeant Daniel P. Morgan, Drug Demand Reduction Administrator at daniel.p.morgan@us.army.mil, or call 860.524.4960.
